The Lizard was Caught

bentley cries all the time to go chase lizards. last week Joni and I tried to help her catch one and ending up running from the flying lizard i hit off the screen and bentley was devastated as it ran away for dear life. rejected again from catching the small creatures she has chased for many months.
but today, i lost my puppy...and gained a lizard eater.

there it was, the most fat lizard i ever saw, doing its pushups on the mat outside our patio door, basking in the sun. and bentley saw it, basking, gloating and eyeing her through the glass. she whined a little, johnny told me do not open that door. i remembered how last week she was so devastated from the almost caught lizard so I opened the door. i figured i'm not helping her this time, she can catch it herself.

where's the dog? she chasing the lizard johnny. so i went out to check on her and there was the biggest lizard running for the honeysuckle bush (freedom from the dog). I took the big wooden stake and peeked through the honeysuckle bush. There he was, panting, out of breath and obviously had been eating a great deal out of our yard lately. i took the stick and knocked it off the wall. It went flying, all limbs were scrambling to cling on to something. with a small thud, it hit the patio, bentley and I screeched towards the patio chest, pulling it out from the window and seeing the big lizard struggle to run up the wall. We cornered it to the screen, knowing it had trouble gripping and running off of it. I knocked to the ground again, screaming for bentley to get it, and it sped much more slowly to towards the rose bushes, across the patio. I had to stop it before it got the wooden table, i lunged with my big stick from the table and pushed it backs towards the patio door, knocking it softly onto the ground, it scrambled, cornered and hoping there was a way out. it fell to the ground, dazed and confused and suddenly it was gone.

Where did it go? i saw bentley slowing chomping chomping...what is that...its a head coming out of her mouth...with a tail..
I screamed for Johnny, Help, Help - she's eating the lizard! Get out here now!! I pulled her jaw open grabbing the lizard and letting it fall softly to the ground, it didn't move. I started to fell sick inside with guilt and scolded bentley for eating our friend. It looked dead. but suddenly it moved, scurried off and bentley cried in desperation as i picked her up and told her how ashamed i was of what we had done.

johnny looked over at me, what were you thinking? what did you think she was going to do with it? of course she was going to eat it.

suddenly a memory flashed in my head of the seal who ate Buster's hand (arrested development). Bentley has now tasted lizard and she will want more. I got sucked in and now she will cry & cry & cry until she gets the lizard again.

Oh my gosh that poor lizard! I wonder if it is telling all of it's lizard friends of its life threatening experience... hmm...

I have to say I pity Bentley more...so led on! Only to be let down!
:)
I remember crying when my dog killed a bird...a baby one that had fallen from its nest...
I had the same feelings...he was no longer my innocent puppy.
More a blood-thirsty, power-driven DOG.
Good luck!

Jonathan says he likes the Arrested Development flashback. How big was the lizard? Oh, Bentley. I miss you! Do your parents not feed you enough? Now you have to be a scavenger like those other poor street dogs? I'm so sorry. I'll be home soon to nanny you!
